Bronx Charter School for the Arts Increases ELA test scores by 19%!

May 14, 2009

The 2009 English Language Arts Exams scores released earlier today by the New York State Education Department showed a 19% increase from the year before in the number of students reaching or exceeding proficiency. With 71% of all students tested (Grades 3-6) meeting state standards, the school saw solid increases in all grades and in all cohorts of students, beat the district’s average score of 69%, and matched the city’s average of 71%. Furthermore, the school received only two Level One scores (1.2% of all students compared to 4.2% in District 8.)

Although Bronx Arts students have outperformed their peers in neighboring schools in the past, the school’s Board and leadership are committed to continual improvement for all students. Therefore, over the past year, Bronx Charter School for the Arts has implemented a school-wide initiative to overhaul and improve teaching and learning in literacy. This effort included the use of a new curriculum, two new staff positions (Literacy Coach and Reading Specialist), and extensive professional development for instructional staff.

“These scores reflect the hard work and dedication of the entire Bronx Arts community – our teachers and staff, our families, and most importantly, our students. We are both gratified by this success and inspired to reach even higher levels of achievement next year,” said Executive Director Xanthe Jory.
