Letter to Mr. Kevin Convey, Editor-in-Chief of the New York Daily News:
Dear Mr. Convey,
On behalf of Bronx Charter School for the Arts, I am writing in response to an August 8th article entitled, “City’s Most Dangerous Schools”. As the article quoted one statistic from a survey taken by only 6% of our student body, we strongly feel that this article unfairly misrepresented our school. It is imperative that we share more information that reflects the true nature of our school community.
The article drew upon the New York City Department of Education’s 2010-2011 School Survey. Taken by teachers, families, and middle and high school students, this survey was only given to our 19 6th grade students; therefore representing a very small percentage of our total student body. In addition, our 6th grade students participated in a year-long bullying awareness and prevention initiative as part of our character education program and, therefore, were more aware of acts of bullying and sensitive to thes questions on the survey.
In fact, the majority of the responses from the survey showed that students and families felt that “the school creates a physically and emotionally secure environment.” Within the Safety and Respect questions answered by our parents, our scores were overwhelmingly positive, ranging from 79%-93%. Furthermore, 84% of our 6th grade students survey, those same students whose responses were used to identify our elementary school as “dangerous”, answered that they feel safe in our school.
Bronx Arts is committed to ensuring a safe and secure environment that promotes optimal student success. Amongst our various stakeholders – students, families, staff, and Trustees – Bronx Arts is seen as a school where all students are nurtured, loved, and protected. Visitors to our school, including prominent New York City elected officials, foundation representatives and other private supporters, as well as other educators have all remarked on the overwhelming sense of happiness and well-being felt from our young students.
It is disappointing to know that one of your journalists could take one isolated statistic and create an illusion about our school that is so far from the truth. We take great pride in our school community and appreciate the opportunity to present to you and your readers a more accurate reflection of Bronx Arts.
Sincerely,
Christina D. Brown
